Delivery times for Capture®
orders vary depending on where you live and what shipping level you chose in the checkout process. Our shipping levels are as follows:
- Ground: standard ground service, takes 2-6 business days on average
- 2-Day: expedited service, takes 2-3 business days on average
- 1-Day: expedited next-day service, takes 1 business day on average, but can take up to 2 business days depending on how late in the day we receive your order
We will ship anywhere outside the US using a standard international service. We use a single service to keep shipping fees low. It is indeed. On July 16th 2011, Capture®
ended a very successful funding stage on Kickstarter
, where it became the 2nd most funded project in Kickstarter’s history. We couldn’t be more thankful for the support of all of our backers out there who have brought Capture into the limelight and helped us show the world what a great product Capture is.
- NEW! Find a Capture-compatible tripod on our Tripod Page.
We’re proud to say that we now offer compatibility with both ARCA®-type and Manfrotto® RC2 tripod heads! In the Fall of 2012 we launched 3 new quick release plates: the ARCAplate, DUALplate and MICROplate. All 3 plates fit into most ARCA-type tripod heads. The DUALplate offers the added bonus of also fitting into most Manfrotto® RC2 tripod heads. For a list of all the compatible tripod brands and models we know of, go here.
Tripod compatibility was a major consideration in the design of Capture. With such a wide range of tripod formats available, it was impossible for us to design a single base plate that fits all tripod head types. ARCA-SWISS® is often regarded as the golden standard for high-quality tripod connection systems. ARCA-SWISS® geometry is simple and logical, and ARCA®-type heads have been widely used by professionals an amateurs for over 20 years. In the Fall of 2012 we expanded our product line to offer Manfrotto® RC2 compatibility. This decision was based on feedback from our customers and retailers, many of whom exclusively use or sell Manfrotto® gear. Certainly, photographers loyal to Bogen, Gitzo and other brands will argue otherwise, but ARCA-SWISS® and Manfrotto® are without question 2 high-quality and highly-adopted tripod systems.
- Capture’s clip is NOT comapatible with the plates that come with your ARCA-SWISS® or Manfrotto® systems. This is becuase of a unique feature on the bottom of Capture’s plate which is necessary for the quick release lock to function.
- Capture’s plate is not compatible with ARCA Slidefix tripods. Slidefix is a system that Arca came out with a few years back, and uses a plate which is narrower than ARCA Classic. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to accommodate both under Capture’s curent design.
- DUALplate specifically works with Manfrotto® RC2 heads. There are several other types of quick release heads that Manfrotto® makes, all of which are different shapes and sizes. RC2 is by far Manfrotto’s most popular model.
The short answer is anybody with a big camera. If you own a DSLR, Micro 4/3′s or large point-and-shoot, Capture will make your shooting workflow exponentially easier. - Hiking & Trekking
- Travel & Backpacking

- Studio Photography (multiple Capture units let you carry multiple camera bodies)
- Photo-walks & Education
- Sports Photography
- Wedding Photography
- Live Music Photography
- Military Photography
- Diving (Capture works with any camera, including underwater ones)
- Rock Climbing
- Paddling & Portaging
Check out our latest video, Capture for Moms. It’s the first in a series of user profiles we’re putting together to show folks from different photography backgrounds how Capture can help them in their day-to-day shooting.
Capture® is designed to attach to any strap or belt that fixed to your body or any of your pre-existing gear. Capture can attach to a strap with the maximum width of 3 inches (7.6cm). Capture does not require a completely rigid strap (i.e. you don’t need special belts or backpacks) but it works better on straps that are stronger and more secure (canvas, leather, ballistic nylon, etc). Most commonly users attach Capture to belts and backpack shoulder straps, but it can also be used with climbing harnesses, life vests, and many other types of gear.
Capture® can adapt to just about any activity. Capture users have taken their units downhill skiing, kayaking, hiking, motorcycling, mountain biking, fishing and mud racing to name a few. Other folks use Capture to free up their hands for pushing a stroller or holding a walking cane. It’s really up to you to decide what activities you want to use it for… Capture will hold your camera – that we can assure you.
The quick release locking mechanism on Capture®
can withstand over 100lbs. of force, as shown in the video below. This is more than enough to hold any camera/lens/battery combination out there. The limitation you’ll face is in the strap, belt or substrate you choose to attach your camera to. On a backpack that has a lot of weight in the back, a sternum strap, and a waist strap, you’ll be able to comfortably put a lot of gear on it (i.e. long zoom lenses, not just camera bodies). A professional camera belt can easily support a number of Capture units, each holding a body and a beefy lens. On the flip side, a thin belt that rides below the top of the hips isn’t going to hold as much weight.
can absolutely hold professional setups or cameras with battery grips. However, you should be cautioned about the ergonomics of using these setups, particularly with normal waist belts and straps. Putting a battery grip (and a flash) on your camera gets the center of gravity further away from the body, and makes Capture less effective. Some people have found success using battery grips and flashes, and that’s great…however, we are not actively promoting Capture as a tool for large body cameras because it is a matter of opinion on how effective it is. Without question, the benefits of Capture are diminished anytime your setup’s weight ventures too far from the base of the camera.
We do, however, promote the use of Capture with a professional-grade camera belt like the Think Tank Pro Speed. When using Capture with a pro belt, the weight of heavier, bulkier rigs is much better supported. Many pro shooters choose this kind of setup for Capture.
You bet. Capture’s quick release plate is equipped with 4 hand strap loops so you can secure a hand strap for extra grip. Capture’s hand strap loops are the same size as the standard strap loops that come on many DSLR bodies. If you’re looking to buy a hand strap, we recommend you go into a camera store and try out a few with Capture before purchasing one.
In order to use your camera with Capture, you must have Capture’s quick release plate attached somewhere on your camera. Some L-brackets have auxiliary tripod mounts that might allow you to attach Capture’s quick release plate and still keep your L-bracket handy. Depending on the size and weight of your camera and L-bracket, this may be workable solution for you.
Check out our blog post on L-bracket compatibility to see some solutions that current Capture users have cooked up.
Our ultimate goal is to partner with a manufacturer of high-end L-brackets to eventually provide an L-bracket that is directly compatible with Capture.
General Capture Information
Capture® has had US and foreign patent protection since 2010. It is currently “Patent Pending.” Trademarks are registered on Capture® Camera Clip System and Peak Design®.
The main components of Capture®
are die cast aluminum parts that receive post machining for guaranteed precision. The quick release button is made of high-strength, low-friction Delrin thermoplastic. The clamping bolts are made of a cold-forged zinc alloy. In addition, there are three stainless steel springs, two assembly screws, a camera connection screw, and a neoprene pad. All parts are corrosion resistant, which makes Capture weather resistant.
Our goal was to create a product with such enduring utility and durability that it will never find a landfill…or even a recycling center (though all parts are recyclable). It is our opinion that garbage stinks.
The aluminum parts of Capture®
are made in Guangzhou, China under the supervision of SKS Die Casting and Engineering in Alameda, CA. The forged screws and quick release button are also custom parts sourced from China. Capture’s springs and screws are coming from Pennsylvania and California, respectively, and the neoprene pad is sourced from the Bay Area.
Capture units are currently assembled under the supervision of Peak Design in San Francisco by the Disabled Employees Workshop, who does good work for a good cause.
